Background

Longwy, on the France–Luxembourg border, was a flagship city of Lorraine’s steel industry. Its steelmaking heritage dates back to the 18th century; by the late 19th century, the arrival of railways linking Paris and Germany spurred rapid growth, making it one of France’s foremost centres of steel smelting and fabrication

This piece is a reproduction of a 1930s Longwy steelworker’s work jacket. "Forgé" derives from the Latin forjare (“to forge”); in French slang, "OS" also signifies a “core pillar”, as in l’os de la famille (“the family’s mainstay”). At the time, a strong and resilient steelworker in Longwy stood not only as a pillar of a thriving industry but also as a pillar of a warm and secure home

About 「SOUMOKU NISHOKU DYEING」

A special traditional hand-finished dyeing technique in Japanese craftsmanship, which involves using two different plant-based dyes to color fabrics or garment, resulting in a dual-tone effect. As a unique variation of plant dyeing, it skillfully utilizes natural plant pigments and dyeing methods to create distinctive two-color patterns, characterized by its natural, eco-friendly, and artistic qualities.

PLANT-DYEING MATERIAL

「YAMAMOMO-DYE」

Yamamomo is a fully natural, plant-based material whose fruit, bark, or roots can all be used as dye sources. Unlike chemical dyes, yamamomo dyeing requires no petroleum derivatives or synthetic pigments, produces no harmful wastewater during the process, and aligns with modern sustainability principles. Moreover, yamamomo grows without cultivation and relies on natural cycles for raw material sourcing, reflecting the traditional ecological ethos of “taking from the mountains and returning to nature.”

「SHIKON-DYE」
Japanese madder (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) is a perennial herbaceous plant, typically cultivated by dyehouse themselves. Dyehouse usually harvest the roots in advance and store them in burlap sacks. The dye for akanezome (Japanese madder dyeing) is extracted from these roots, with the entire process being largely handmade and extremely time-consuming. Interestingly, the older the madder roots, the more vibrant and effective the dyeing results become
