Background

Haussmann's renovation of Paris (1853–1870) stands as one of the most iconic urban regeneration projects in 19th-century Europe. Spearheaded by Napoleon III and executed by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, Prefect of the Seine, the scheme drew hundreds of thousands of masons from Limousin to Paris.

Constantly exposed to cement, lime and construction grime, these labourers wore utilitarian garments in muted taupe and dark umber brown. Practical and highly stain-resistant, this colour palette became the defining hallmark of Paris’s working-class builders of the era.

This dyeing method offers several advantages such as natural and pure colors, strong antibacterial properties, and being healthy and safe. When dyeing, it usually results in a black color with a bluish - purple tint, which is very beautiful. Sometimes, it may even be regarded as dark purple or gray - blue

「SHIKON-DYE」
Japanese madder (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) is a perennial herbaceous plant, typically cultivated by dyehouse themselves. Dyehouse usually harvest the roots in advance and store them in burlap sacks. The dye for akanezome (Japanese madder dyeing) is extracted from these roots, with the entire process being largely handmade and extremely time-consuming. Interestingly, the older the madder roots, the more vibrant and effective the dyeing results become
