Background
From 1880 to 1914, Montmartre was Paris’s true Bohemian artistic heart, home to generations of painters, poets and avant-garde creators. In this golden era of French modern art, a unique sartorial culture for male artists emerged in studios, cafés and informal art salons.
Parisian haute société of the time favoured tightly cut, uniform formal suits, emblems of rigid social order. Montmartre’s artists consciously broke away from this tradition for a freer, easier way of life. They discarded stiff collars, rigid cravats and over-refined tailoring, preferring textured, durable fabrics: heavy twill, heavy canvas, corduroy and coarse wool.
The quintessential Montmartre Bohemian style featured relaxed silhouettes, silk scarves in place of formal neckwear, effortless layering, and soft felt hats as a hallmark. It cast off the rigid formalities of mainstream dress, while retaining refined, restrained gentlemanly poise.
